About Us

The center of Graz roots back to 1972. In this year, Lama Ole Nydahl started his first Buddhist lectures on request of H.H. the 16th Karmapa Rigpe Dorje in Graz and induced those interested in Diamond Way meditation.

Since 1983, a group of practitioners kept in touch with many teachers of the Karma Kagyu lineage, which continued coming back to Graz to give initiations and courses to show their support. Through this support on a voluntary basis it was also possible to provide a free meditation for the general public: Originally on sublease in a hostel (Idlhofgasse), since 1986  a house at St. Peter-Pfarrweg served as the first Diamond Way center in Graz.

Eleven years later, in February 1997, the Buddhist center moved to a converted farmhouse on Pfeifferhofweg in Graz-Andritz. Just a year later a "Weisheitsstupa" was built and inaugurated by the master of meditation Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche. This special event was attended by Vajrayana Buddhists from around the world.

Since then, this powerful place offers a wide variety of public meditations, Buddhist lectures, weekend programs, as well as major international courses and is regularly visited by various teachers of the Karma Kagyu lineage, in particular by Lama Ole Nydahl. H.H. the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje, the spiritual head of our lineage was guest in the years 2000, 2004 and 2009. During the Summer course in August 2009, practitioners from 28 different nations participated in the five-day Mahamudra course given by Lama Ole Nydahl, topped by an inauguration and the so-called Bodhisattva promise by H.H. 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje.

Basis for the friendly activity and the successful development of the center has always been meditating on the teacher, the 16th Karmapa. In addition, other methods of the Diamond Way, such as the basic exercises (Ngöndro) and - on special occasions, when required - different meditations as the "Buddha of Limitless Light" (Öpame) or "Loving Eyes" (Chenrezig) are practiced.

If you are interested in our offer, you are welcome to come to our center on Pfeifferhofweg 96 every Tuesday and Friday at 8:00pm for a short introductory talk and a first experience of meditation or to be inspired by one of our lectures (see calendar of events). We also like to arrange an appointment for a personal information evening.

We look forward to your visit!
